A Long Drive

It’s been 24 hours since we left Winston-Salem, and now I am resting in a Baymont Inn in Salina, KS – 1,150 miles from home and only 400 miles from Colorado Springs. I had a feeling that the boys would enjoy the adventure of this first hard push across the country, and they did. We rotated drivers every 2 hours or so, which had two benefits: we were able to rest frequently, and we got to spend time with each other as we rotated the seating arrangement in the car. As much as I enjoyed talking with the boys when I was in the front, I think I enjoyed being in the back and listening to their conversations more. A lot of the boys’ conversations revolved around work they wanted to their cars. John will take a 2 hour auto body repair class to begin his school day next year, and quite a few times I heard the boys say that they should be able to do certain things “after (John) takes his class next year.” I think he will be motivated to do well!

I’m tired right now, and am really glad that this first stretch of the drive is done. While I am resting, the boys are out somewhere in Salina, getting supper and seeing the town. It’s great to see them enjoying being together, and I am trying to give them a lot of freedom on this trip.

We started driving this morning at 5 am, crossed the Mississippi at St. Louis mid-morning, and then drove across Missouri in heavy rain. Fortunately the weather cleared as we approached Kansas City, and shortly after entering Kansas we stopped in Lawrence for a planned Disc Golf outing. The course was tough, and we had to team up with some local players in order to find our way around, but it was good to exercise after so many hours in the car.

I was expecting to see more prairie land in Kansas, but we didn’t see this until we reached the middle of the state. When we did, it was spectacular. John was driving and all of a sudden he said “Now that would be a great picture.” We took a few pictures, but were too tired to stop more than once. Tomorrow we hope to be well rested for the drive that I have been looking forward to – crossing the prairie of Kansas and eastern Colorado and approaching the spectacular Rocky Mountains. We should be in the Colorado Springs area late in the afternoon, with a day and a half to sight-see before heading to Buena Vista, CO for Wednesday’s rafting trip.
